The Sleep Lab

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a sleep study and why might I need one?

A sleep study, also called polysomnography, is a medically supervised overnight evaluation of your sleep. It records brain waves, breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels, limb movement, and other body functions while you sleep. This detailed information helps Dr Sepulveda diagnose common sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, parasomnias, periodic limb movement disorder, narcolepsy, and others.

Why would my provider recommend an in-lab sleep study instead of a home test?

Your provider may recommend an in-lab sleep study, or polysomnography (PSG) when:

  • A comprehensive assessment of sleep stages and multiple physiologic signals is needed.
  • There are symptoms beyond simple breathing issues (e.g., narcolepsy, limb movements, parasomnias).
  • You have complex medical conditions (cardiac or pulmonary diseases) or unclear symptoms from a home test.

In contrast, home sleep apnea tests (HSAT) are typically used only when moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea is suspected, and other serious sleep disorders aren’t likely. Home tests are less comprehensive. If a HSAT is inconclusive, we may recommend a polysomnography as a follow-up.

What makes our sleep lab comfortable?

Our sleep testing rooms are designed to look and feel like a private bedroom, not a clinical space. This approach aligns with evidence showing that unfamiliar environments can affect sleep, a phenomenon known as the First Night Effect, in which many people sleep differently in a lab than they do at home.

Our rooms feature:

  • Cozy, restful décor and bedding
  • Private environment with minimal clinical appearance
  • Warm, non-clinical lighting
  • Bluetooth®-enabled equipment which allows you to get up freely as needed throughout the night

All of this helps you relax more naturally so we can capture the most representative sleep data possible.

What technology does Sleep Fit Medical use during my sleep study?

Instead of tethering you to a bulky bedside computer, our sleep lab equipment uses Bluetooth®-enabled sensors and devices. This modern setup gives you greater freedom of movement and comfort throughout the night while still collecting high-quality, AASM-standard physiological data. Our goal is to reduce any physical or psychological barriers to a good night’s sleep during testing.

Can I choose a home sleep study instead?

In some cases, a home sleep apnea test may be appropriate. Especially if your provider suspects obstructive sleep apnea with no other complicating conditions. However, home tests measure fewer physiological parameters and may not be suitable for diagnosing broader sleep disorders.

Your provider will help you determine which test is most appropriate based on your symptoms, medical history, and diagnostic needs.
